Copilot vs ChatGPT for Image Generation: Designer, GPT Image, and DALL-E in 2026

Copilot free wins on budget. ChatGPT Plus wins on iteration. And DALL-E 3 retired on 12 May 2026; here is what replaces it and what changed.

Split verdict: depends on your use case
DALL-E 3 Retired: 12 May 2026

OpenAI deprecated DALL-E 3 on 12 May 2026. GPT Image 1.5 is now the default image generation model in ChatGPT. What changed: better typography rendering inside images (a long-standing DALL-E 3 weakness), stronger composition control, and native conversational editing. The aesthetic style is slightly different. Content policies remain similar. If you have existing prompts optimised for DALL-E 3, small adjustments may be needed.

Copilot Designer (Free) vs ChatGPT Plus (GPT Image 1.5)

Copilot Designer (Free)
  • +Free: generous daily credits at no cost
  • +Good quality for brand-safe business visuals
  • +Available inside copilot.microsoft.com
  • -One-shot generation; no multi-turn iterative refinement
  • -Limited control over specific elements
  • -Microsoft content policy may be more restrictive
ChatGPT Plus (GPT Image 1.5)
  • +Conversational iterative editing (multi-turn)
  • +Better typography inside images than DALL-E 3 was
  • +Stronger composition control
  • +Integrated into the same chat context as text
  • -Requires ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo)
  • -Daily image generation limits on Plus tier

The Iteration Workflow Difference

The key difference is iteration. Copilot Designer is one-shot: you write a prompt and get an image. To change it, you write a new prompt and get a new image. ChatGPT Plus with GPT Image 1.5 is conversational: “Generate an illustration of a meeting room. Now make the background blue. Now remove the clock on the wall. Now change the art style to flat illustration.” This multi-turn iterative refinement is a significant productivity advantage for visual professionals.

When to Use Dedicated Image Tools Instead

Midjourney ($10-30/mo)

Artistic quality and unique aesthetic output. Still the benchmark for visually distinctive, high-quality art. Neither Copilot nor ChatGPT matches Midjourney at the top end.

Adobe Firefly (included with Creative Cloud)

Commercial-safe images with explicit IP indemnity. If the image will be used commercially and IP clearance matters, Firefly is the safest option.

Stable Diffusion (free, local)

Full control with no content policies. For developers and power users who want to run models locally with fine-grained control.

Image Generation FAQs

Is Copilot or ChatGPT better for image generation?
Split verdict. Copilot free wins on budget: it offers more free daily Designer image credits than ChatGPT free at zero cost, making it the best free AI image generator. ChatGPT Plus wins on iteration: GPT Image 1.5 (which replaced DALL-E 3 on 12 May 2026) allows conversational editing across multiple turns, refining the same image with natural language instructions. If you need many images at no cost, use Copilot free. If you need one excellent image with iterative refinement, use ChatGPT Plus.
What happened to DALL-E 3?
DALL-E 3 was retired by OpenAI on 12 May 2026. GPT Image 1.5 is now the image generation model in ChatGPT. GPT Image 1.5 delivers better typography inside images, stronger composition control, and native conversational editing (you can refine the same image across multiple turns without starting over). The aesthetic style is slightly different from DALL-E 3.
Does Copilot free include image generation?
Yes. Microsoft Copilot free at copilot.microsoft.com includes Designer image generation with limited daily credits (refreshed daily). This is the same free service as the old Bing Image Creator, now integrated into Copilot. The quality is good for brand-safe social and business visuals. Daily credit limits apply and vary; check the current limits on microsoft.com.
